Diary of a Sunflower

Here are some excerpts from the booklet my 3rd grade students wrote as if they were a sunflower plant. Each drew a really cute picture to go with their diary entry.

Enjoy!
April Hill
Two Rivers Community School
Boone, NC

March 17th
" It is dark around me and I am surrounded by all my friends.
Suddenly, I fall out of my dark prison. I see people wearing green. I wonder when I get to wear green? Also, Tomato plant let me read his diary. He didn't even mention me!" (note: the prison is the bag of
seeds)

April 1st:
" I heard it was April Fool's Day. The oak tree played a trick on me.
He threw acorns at me. I have a bump on my head. I can't wait to get back at him. I am trying to think about what to do!"

May 28th:
" Today is Memorial Day! My poor grandma died in the drought last year. My friend Worm got together with some friends and made a parade. Oh boy, now they are coming over here. I hope they don't think I am compost!"

June 21st:
" Today some birds landed on me and started pecking at my seeds. I tried to shake them off, but they didn't listen. Finally, they flew away. This afternoon someone came and watered me. It was so good to drink again! I also had a fight with my best friend, Margaret, the petunia. It was soooo hot . .. not a great day for the first day of summer. Oh well, maybe tomorrow will be better."

June 23rd:
" I'm big and strong now, and my flower is so bright. Every time my friend Worm goes by he peeks his head out to the dirt to say hello.
And he says, "You have the brightest flower I have ever seen!"

July 4th
" Grandpa said it was 4th of July. He didn't tell me anything more. I was wondering what they did. When they came, I thought it was World War 3! It was so loud, but colorful in the sky!"

August 1st:
" I'm so happy, a 3rd grade class is making a book about me! I'm gonna be famous! Yaaaaaaaayyyyyy! By the way, if I'm saying that in the book, I'm saying it ecstatically!"
