Diary of a Tomato

Here are some excerpts from the booklet my 3rd grade students wrote as if they were a tomato plant.

Enjoy!

Two Rivers Community School
Boone, NC

March 17th
" I wish I had a stem. It would be so fun, but I don't. I heard it was St. Patrick's day. I wonder who he is. Mom told me a story , but I forgot. I love eating my cotyledon. The soil is warm. It's raining hard. The soil is getting wet. The sun came out. My friend came by.
He's a worm. "Hello" I said. "Hi" he said. "Can you loosen the soil?"
" Yes, of course I can!" "Ahh, a beetle!" "The wind will blow him away" said Worm. "Hay the hummingbird, beat your wings" "OK" "Good- bye beetle!""

April 1st
" Today I grew my first root! I was very excited! I also played a joke on my friend Worm. It was very hard to plan. When worm came to loosen my soil, I squeezed my root down and bonked him on the head!"

April 30th
" I am growing another leaf. It is a beautiful day of joy. I asked all of the worms to make the words Happy Spring with their bodies. Thank you worms!"

June 17th
" I had just woke up and there was Fly flying around shouting "Wake up, it's Father's day!" Oh my goodness! I will make a present for my father. I thought for a while and suddenly had an idea. Just then Spider came down. "Spider, you are the one I want to talk to." "Can you weave a web in between my leaves that says Happy Father's day?"
Spider said yes and he did it right above my first flower. After it was all done, I thanked him and he ran off to catch another bug."

June 21st
" It was summer and I was drinking a lot of water until I noticed a
tomato on me. At first I didn't know what it was. I tried to shake it
off. But it swung in my face and knocked me down. I never tried to
mess with it again. Later I realized it was a part of me!"

July 4th
" My worm friends wove an American Flag with my fresh-smelling leaves.
But since no tomato leaves are red, white, or blue, they found a set
of three red, white and blue paint cans just before plucking off my
leaves. It hurt! Once they found the paint, they painted my leaves
red, white and blue. They also aerated the soil and made a little
space to put the American flag in. Now I'm waiting for the celebration!"

July 11th
" Today Beezer pollinated my last flower! It will soon be a nice ripe
tomato. Grandpa told me that my fruit will be picked in a short time.
It could be useful to humans. Butterfret the butterfly asked if she
could try one of my ripe tomatoes. A little girl picked the tomato
Butterfret was going to taste."
