Everybody Needs a Rock by Byrd Baylor - everything by this woman is wonderful and gives 1-10 directions for choosing your own rock (used for homework once); a great way to start the school year is to read The Way to Start the Day

The Gardener by Sarah Stewart - letter format again, intriguing pics that need to be studied to get it, wonderful story

The Gigantic Turnip by Aleksei Tolstoy and Niamh Sharkey - a Russian folktale with hilarious illustrations and a story sure to please

The Great Kapok Tree by Lynne Cherry - a classic tale of habitat destruction or avoidance of

Harvest by Kris Waldherr - explains the growing year from a young girl's perspective, culminating in the harvest; the magic and warmth of autumn

The Tiny Seed by Eric Carle - the simple life cycle of a plant made into an exciting story with a nature and perseverance lesson throw in for good measure - The Carrot Seed by Ruth Krauss along the same lines

Weslandia by Paul Fleischman - this story really gets kids' attention, good book to share with children and discuss having passion in our lives and to refrain from being judgmental
