Cooking with Kids Safety Rules

safetyFor more information:http://www.cookingwithkids.net/

To ensure safety, go over rules with students about safe cooking. Recruit parent volunteers to assist with cutting veggies and supervising children.

Safety Rules:

  1. Tie long hair back.
  2. Wash hands with soap and water. Dry hands thoroughly.
  3. Wear an apron. This will keep your clothes neat and keep loose shirts from catching on equipment.
  4. Use hot pads to handle pots and other hot items.
  5. Clean up spills and messes as they happen.
  6. Do not place hot items directly on tables, desks or counters. Use a hot pad.
  7. When opening lids on pans, tip them away from. This will prevent the escaping steam from hitting you in the face.
  8. Keep handles of pans, pots, etc. pointed towards the center of the stove. If you are using a hot plate, keep handles pointed towards the middle of the table or counter. This will prevent you from bumping the handle and knocking the pot off the stove.
  9. Make sure mixers and blenders are turned off and unplugged before scraping the sides of the container.
  10. Do not use electrical appliances near water.
  11. When using a microwave, use only microwave-safe equipment.
  12. When you are using a knife or scissors, pick them up by their handles only. When cutting with a knife, hold the handle and keep the sharp edge pointed away from you when cutting.
