This week’s theme is Earth Day! Our “Growing Minds Day by Day” educational resource lists are designed for families and educators to use during the COVID-19 quarantine and beyond. 

Welcome to “Growing Minds Day by Day”, a compilation of educational resources for use by families and educators during the COVID-19 quarantine (and beyond!). Each week, the Growing Minds team will select a theme related to food, gardens, or nature, and share thematic recommendations for children’s literature, activities, recipes, and online resources. This week’s theme is mud and soil!

This week’s theme is birds and trees! Our “Growing Minds Day by Day” educational resource lists are designed for families and educators to use during the COVID-19 quarantine and beyond. 

Introduce students to insects and other bugs they will find in the garden, their characteristics, and how they affect plants. Teach students to observe (rather than harm) living things in the garden and natural environment.

Children learn about different types of melons (cantaloupe, watermelon, and honeydew) grown in WNC, become familiar with tasting new foods, and practice using their senses to explore environments.
Children become familiar with trying new foods in the preschool setting. Students interact with a new food in alternative ways, making predictions and using descriptive words to explore the melons.

Through a creative exploration of pumpkins, students gain a new understanding of this vegetable and all of its diverse uses. Students use a pumpkin seed activity to practice counting.
